The Number I’s Leadership Institute is the Order’s premiere leadership training and is the impetus for the curriculum structure of the ensuing programs. The focus of the Institute is to educate and empower the I’s to understand their role and responsibility as the chapter’s highest elected officer, recognize the tools and support systems provided, and to understand the standards and policies of operating an active chapter. As the second oldest fraternity leadership school in the nation, NLI has occurred in various formats since 1946. Each spring, Province Councils take place across the country as regional officer training conferences. The standardized curriculum not only builds on the training and empowerment themes of NLI for the entire officer core, but also gives uniform and specific training to each of the IIs through IXs. In addition to officer training focuses include leadership, risk management, recruitment, ritual, scholarship, member education, and values based education. Volunteer alumni facilitation is a key aspect for the educational discussions that are central to the curriculum. The Emerging Leaders Academy is a four-day unmatched experience held each summer in Lexington, Virginia. ELA utilizes leadership sessions, experiential learning, operational tracks, and service learning and marks a transformative event in the birthplace of our Order. Specifically and as an example, ELA provides training for our IIs, offering the best and innovative ways to improve new member education as well as peer facilitator opportunities for seasoned chapter leaders. As peer facilitators, over a dozen undergraduate brothers lead their own small group of younger members through a “mock chapter experience.” The brothers are able to gather and learn near our founding site, Mulberry Hill & on campus at both Washington & Lee and VMI. Stewards of the Order standardizes education on the customs of the Order for our undergraduates and alumni. This intense, eight-hour workshop focuses on the symbolism and philosophy of the ritual, daily application, and the production of the initiation ceremony. To become “Stewards” of the Order, participants must pass an oral exam. A Steward receives a completion certificate and lapel pin. Click here for more info.
