After an eight-year legal battle with Planmeca U.S.A, Inc., Dr. Ron Massie (Alpha Delta–William Jewell ’79) has successfully defended his patents on improvements in 3D dental imaging. This legal process, conducted through his company Osseo Imaging, LLC, included multiple patent examiners granting the patents on his inventions, a jury verdict in his favor after a week-long civil trial and the U.S. Court of Appeals confirming the verdict and the legitimacy of Dr. Massie’s inventions.

This legal process, conducted through his company Osseo Imaging, LLC, included multiple patent examiners granting the patents on his inventions, a jury verdict in his favor after a week-long civil trial and the U.S. Court of Appeals confirming the verdict and the legitimacy of Dr. Massie’s inventions. Dr. Massie conceptualized his innovation in the dental imaging systems that generated densitometric tomographic 3D images in 1999. He was motivated to improve these systems after attending a University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry alumni meeting, during which one of the “Fathers of Modern Dentistry,” Dr. Gordon Christensen, invited attendees to innovate the over 100-year-old X-ray dental technology. From this challenge, Dr. Massie’s dream of improved dental imaging systems was born.
Dr. Massie is the inventor of six patents in the U.S., as well as additional ones in Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Monaco, Lichtenstein, and a pending patent in Japan. He continues to fight against other dental X-ray equipment companies that have used his intellectual property for decades. He tells others to never give up on their dreams and ideas no matter the obstacles they may face.
